Ranked by AER, highest first. Nobody can pay for position or inclusion. How we rank, and how we get paid
Fixed term, notice or instant: the actual trade
A fixed term pays more because you give up the right to change your mind. That is the entire deal, so price it honestly: the gap between the best instant rate and a one year fix is what a year of flexibility costs you. If the gap is small, take the flexibility. If you are holding an emergency fund, the gap is irrelevant, because that money was never available to fix.
Notice accounts sit between the two: a higher rate than instant access in exchange for telling the bank 7 to 32 days before you withdraw. They suit money with a known spend date, a car, a tax bill, a deposit on a house.
The DIRT haircut belongs in the comparison
Most of the accounts above lose 33% of their interest to DIRT. The table's DIRT column also tells you who takes it: Irish banks withhold it before you see the money, while most EU banks pay you gross and leave the declaring to you. Neither is cheaper, but the second one comes with paperwork, covered on the DIRT page. State Savings products avoid the tax entirely and have their own page.
Questions Irish savers actually ask
- Should I fix my savings or keep them instant access?
- Split the question by purpose. Money you could need this year belongs in instant access, whatever the rate. Money you will not touch can be fixed for the extra margin, and splitting a lump across terms (a ladder) keeps some of it coming free every year.
- Why are Irish deposit rates falling?
- Deposit pricing follows the European Central Bank's deposit facility rate, currently 2.25%. As the ECB cuts, fixed terms reprice first. A good fixed rate today locks the current level in; instant access rates can be cut at any time.
- Are deposits in non-Irish banks safe?
- EU deposit guarantee schemes are harmonised at €100,000 per person per bank, but the scheme that pays out is the one in the country where the bank is authorised. The protection column names it for every account here.
- Do State Savings beat bank deposit rates?
- Sometimes, once tax is counted. Bank interest loses a third to DIRT; State Savings pay no DIRT at all, so a lower headline rate can leave you more. The State Savings page makes that comparison per product.
