A lump sum is three decisions, not one
An inheritance, a house sale, a redundancy payment: the question is never "which account", it is how much of it you need soon, how much has a date on it, and how much can be locked away. Answer that and the table below answers itself.

Ranked by AER, highest first. Nobody can pay for position or inclusion. How we rank, and how we get paid
First, the rate you are already paying
Every table on this site ranks what your money can earn. None of them can see what it already costs you, and for most people that is the bigger number. Interest you pay is not taxed, so clearing a debt beats a deposit paying the same headline rate every time — DIRT only ever takes a bite out of one side of the comparison.
The top rate in the table is 3.30%, which after 33% DIRT leaves you 2.21%. That is the hurdle. Any borrowing costing more than 2.21% — most credit cards, most car finance, most personal loans, most overdrafts — is earning your money a better and completely certain return than any account listed here, because the saving is the interest you stop paying. Only tax-free State Savings are compared against their headline rate instead, since nothing is deducted from them.
Two things this does not mean. Keep an emergency fund liquid regardless: a cleared loan is not money you can reach on a Tuesday, and borrowing it back costs more than the interest you saved. And check for a redemption penalty before overpaying a fixed rate — some are free to clear, some are not, and the penalty can be larger than a year of the difference. Once the expensive debt is gone, the table above is the right question again.
The three-bucket split
- Bucket one, the next 12 months. Emergency fund and anything you might spend. Best instant access rate wins, currently 3.10%. Rate matters less than access; never lock this money.
- Bucket two, money with a date. The car, the extension, the tax bill. A notice account or a fixed term that matures just before the date. You know the date; make the money agree to it.
- Bucket three, not this decade's money. The longest fix you are comfortable with, up to 3.30% at the top of the table, or State Savings where the DIRT exemption does the work of a higher rate. For genuinely long horizons, deposits stop being the answer at all: that conversation lives at etf.ie.
Over €100,000: the guarantee comes first
Deposit protection is €100,000 per person per institution. Above that, the rate is the second question and the split is the first: two banks for €200,000, or joint accounts doubling each limit for couples. State Savings are the exception, with an unlimited State guarantee and a €120,000 cap per person per fixed-term issue. The protection column in the table names the scheme on every row, because "guaranteed" without a country attached is not information.
The DIRT arithmetic on a lump
On €50,000 at 3.00%, DIRT takes €495 of the €1,500 interest every year. That is why the DIRT-free State Savings rates punch above their headline, and why the exemptions for over-65s are worth a form. Run your own number in the calculator.
Questions Irish savers actually ask
- Where is the best place to put a lump sum in Ireland?
- Split it by when you need it. Money for the next year: the best instant access rate. Money with a known date: a notice account or a fix that matures before the date. Money you will not touch: the longest fix you are comfortable with, or DIRT-free State Savings if you pay tax at the top rate.
- What should I do with more than €100,000?
- Deposit guarantees cover €100,000 per person per bank, so split anything above that across institutions. A couple gets €200,000 per bank in joint names. State Savings carry an unlimited State guarantee, which makes them the simplest home for the amount above your bank limits.
- What is a savings ladder?
- Splitting a lump across terms, for example a third each in 1, 2 and 3 year fixes. Something matures every year, so you get most of the long-term rate while never being more than a year from a chunk of the money.
- Should I pay off my mortgage instead of saving a lump sum?
- Compare after-tax: deposit interest loses 33% to DIRT, while a mortgage overpayment "earns" your mortgage rate tax free. At typical Irish mortgage rates the overpayment usually wins mathematically. Keep an emergency fund liquid either way, and check whether your fixed rate carries a redemption penalty.
- Should I clear other debts before saving?
- Work out what the best rate here leaves you after DIRT — 2.21% on today's top rate of 3.30% — and treat that as the hurdle. Debt costing more than that, which covers most credit cards, car finance, personal loans and overdrafts, is the better use of the money, because the interest you stop paying is never taxed and never uncertain. Keep an emergency fund liquid either way.
